BREVARD, N.C. ? The University of Virginia's College at Wise racked up 454 yards of total offense while opening the season with a 44-20 victory over Brevard College on Saturday.

The Highland Cavaliers (1-0) led 24-13 at halftime and put the game away with a 20-point third quarter.

After beating out redshirt freshman Brad Robbins for the starting quarterback job in the preseason, redshirt sophomore Randy Hippeard was impressive. Hippeard completed 19-of-29 passes for 255 yards and three scores.

Kendon Doe was Hippeard's favorite target as he caught scoring passes of 12 and 8 yards and set a career high with 110 yards yards on seven catches. Hippeard also hooked up with freshman Matt Barbour on a 42-yard scoring strike.

Robbins entered the game in the third quarter and was 0-of-2 passing and carried the ball three times for two yards.

UVa.-Wise was also efficient on the ground, compiling 199 yards. Ra'Shad Morgan (21 carries, 139 yards, one touchdown) led the way, while Jason Lovett (10 carries, 61 yards), Chris Laws (7 carries, 24 yards, one touchdown) and fullback Dustin Thompson (1-yard touchdown run) also got some carries.

Matt Gular had eight tackles for the UVa.-Wise defense, while Joe Bodenheimer added seven stops. J.R. Wilson (Tazewell) had three tackles, while Clyde Nophlin (Virginia High) added a pair of stops. Former area prep standouts Jerry Bentley (two tackles), Lance Ayers (one tackle) and Aaron Looney (one tackle) also got in on the act on defense.

Donald Hudson threw for a score and ran for a score to lead Brevard (0-1), which played the program's first game since 1950.

UVa.-Wise hosts North Greeneville next Saturday at 7 p.m.

not much the starter had a good game

I think that Brad will need a lot of time to adjust to the challenge of playing football on a college level, especially since he's 2nd string and won't be playing as much in actual games.

It was kind of the same way for Mabe. Even though he was always first string, I can remember his first year he was always talking about how much faster college football seemed to move when compared to his high school playing days.. it's hard to imagine how tough it really would be.

You can just watch some of UVA's (home) games and clearly see how much faster it really is.. there's definitely a pretty big difference in my opinion.
